Taekwondo Compared To MMA

Taekwon-do and MMA are not the same thing. You can’t compare them as they are more different than apples and oranges.

Taekwon-do is a Korean martial art, derived from Taekkyon and various older martial arts, including Shotokan Karate. It has several variants, but it is fully codified. It also exists in the form of a sport, although the sport is not completely indicative of the martial art style.

MMA is Mixed Martial Arts, a loose term for the varying styles that involve mixing two or more martial arts together in a non-codified way, usually for the purpose of MMA sport fighting. It is not a martial art in and of itself.

Taekwon-do is a specific form of martial arts, focused primarily on kicking and punching.

MMA (mixed martial arts) is just that, a mix of any form of fighting style that contributes to the users ability to beat their opponent. There is no “best” style that it takes from and it is constantly evolving. MMA fighters will use any technique that gives them an advantage over their opponent. They will kick and punch as well, but will also include grabbing, throwing, choking, locking, etc.

In a street fight, as with any fight using any styles though a really good Taekwon-do opponent could beat an MMA opponent. In a street fight it comes down to who is the better fighter.

In a formal MMA competition the MMA fighter will have a large advantage just like in a Tae Kwon Do competition the TKD fighter would have a large advantage over an MMA stylist.

Taekwon-do, like all martial arts, also has a spiritual aspect to it involving tenets such as courtesy, self control, perseverance, integrity & indomitable spirit. MMA does not employ any of these tenets or spiritual aspects.
